How to care for your raffia item ?
Raffia is a natural, lightweight, and breathable fiber derived from palm leaves, valued for its organic texture and artisanal charm. Because it is a living plant fiber that can lose its shape or weaken when soaked, a few simple steps will help preserve its beauty and durability over time.
Washing
- Do not machine wash or submerge your raffia item in water. To clean it, gently wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth or a soft-bristled brush to remove dust and surface dirt.
- If a stain occurs, spot-clean immediately with cold water and a drop of mild soap, rubbing gently in the direction of the weave.
Rinsing
- A careful dab with a clean, damp cloth dipped in pure cold water is the secret to removing any soap residue, ensuring the natural plant fibers remain strong, flexible, and free from white marks.
Drying
- Always air dry your item flat in a well-ventilated area, away from direct heat and intense sunlight, which can dry out the fiber and make it brittle.
- To preserve the shape of hats or bags while drying, stuff them gently with clean tissue paper or a soft towel.
Ironing
- Ironing is generally not required, but if your raffia item gets bent out of shape, you can use a gentle garment steamer from a short distance to lightly humidify the fiber, then reshape it by hand. Let it dry completely in its corrected shape.
- Dry cleaning is not an option for natural raffia.
Small actions that make a difference
Never submerge raffia in water or put it in the washing machine
Avoid carrying overly heavy items in raffia bags to prevent the natural weave from stretching out of shape
Store your item in a cool, dry place, ideally inside a breathable cotton dust bag when not in use
If exposed to rain, reshape the item immediately and let it dry flat completely before storing it
Keep away from open flames and prolonged, intense sunlight to preserve the natural pigments of the fiber
